Well, it’s that time again. Megan and I will be linking up with our good friend Dee Dee Wills over at Mrs. Wills Kindergarten for her Peek at My Week Post. You can link up, too! Grab the button at the bottom of this post and head over to her blog and link up your post!
So what are we doing the first week of school…SURVIVING!!!! My principal once said, “Get them in the door, feed them lunch, and get them back on the bus and we will call it a success!” Now, hopefull more than that will happen, but it’s kinda crazy so we will so how this goes. Here’s what we are doing, or hope we are doing, this week:
In our morning circle time for the next few weeks we will start to introduce the carpet bags and all the things that go in them. But, we will also be introducing all of our classroom expectations, procedures, and routines during this time.
We are planning on starting Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop right from the beginning. Now this time will only last about 10 minutes for the mini lesson and then about 5 minutes for time to look at books or draw/write on paper. No real expectations here, just setting the routine.
During our foundational time, we plan to start introducing some of our “staple games”. The games on w-f are games that we play all year. I just change the clip art and change the standard and it’s a new game. This way we don’t have to spend so much time each week introducing how to play each game. This time is right before our literacy center time.
During literacy centers we will run a small group while the other children look at books and play in the housekeeping—taking turns. We still value play centers. Once we get everything up and going, these are not done during our literacy centers. But, to get things started, it’s something they can do without a lot of explanation. Each day we will introduce a new center, or part of a center. This will take us several weeks to get everything introduced. Slow and steady!!!! This will last in total, to do all three things, about 50 minutes.
During our Social Studies/Science time we are singing songs about Going to School, Friends, and how we are each unique and special. You will want to pair this with a book from your classroom collection on Going to School.
We are going to do a large group math activity to start our math workshop time. These are easy activities that can be done rather quickly. Like literacy centers, we will run a small group each day and introduce the math materials one at a time.
You can download these plans here.
I started last year remaking some of the things that I first made for tpt. After going to Vegas and sitting in on the session with Deanna and Deedee’s session on “Did I Make That?”, I was motivated to get back to the revisions. This week, I revised my literacy game pack and my math game pack for back to school.
So grab the button and head on over to Deedee’s blog and link up. Or, just hop over there and read what others are doing this week.

Wow! You are busy and jump right in from the very start! I would love to do that; however, we have staggered start where half of the students come the first 2 days and the other half come the next 2days so we just spend time on rules and routines. The rest of the day is spent combining our 5 groups to do whole K projects. Then for the next couple of months, assessing and observing our students for our state's new Kdg. readiness assessment. Not too much time to teach in the beginning weeks.
Summer is over... Wah... Wah...
My students LOVED Mr. Potato Head last year! Such a fun behavior tool!
Thanks for linking up my friend!!!
Well, if I can't have you here, I'll happily take the next best thing, your plans!! Thanks a ton :)
***Kim - I hope you're planning on doing a florida training this year!! If so, I'll be there! I love your presentations!
