I have a question about the food clipart that you use for managing small groups. What does earning food clipart mean? Do they get happy rocks in the jar or something like that? Just curious!

  8. Andrea...Yes you can let them put happy rocks in the jar when they fill their basket. I have found that kiddos really just want that verbal praise. So once they have their basket full, we just give them a cheer! They are so proud to stand up in front and the rest of the children to give them a special cheer.

  11. Mrs. Glennon--I found them at hobby lobby. I put the magnet on the back. They have all kinds of wooden cut outs at hobby lobby.I have also seen them at Michaels and Walmart. I just look for ones that match my unit.

  13. Miss J-I create the slides in power point, save them as a png and then use windows live writer to post. The backgrounds are scrapbooking paper that I have scanned.

  16. I L-O-V-E the happy rocks! We add helpful hearts when the kiddos notice their friends being kind or helpful. We fill our heart bucket with these after we read the book about being a bucket filler and at the end of the year each child makes a bracelet with the hearts.

  17. Love all of these ideas! I have a question about what do you have your students do as an early finisher when they are at their tables and have finished their independent work, activity, or what ever? I struggle with this, i want them to work on something independently, quietly, not to disturb the others or myself but yet be productive and applying their knowledge and learning. Please give me some ideas! Also i have a few that struggle keeping their hands to themselves do you have some type of behavior management idea for this that you do?

    My kiddos don't actually do "tables". They do have a group of kids they work with, but it might be on the floor. Anyways, I have 5 groups. Each group has a different have to. Once they finish their have to, they choose from either a literacy center if it is literacy time or a math center if it is math time. These are open ended with several choices. So, they are really never done.
    Kids that fidget need something in their hands. Check with your OT teacher (it may be a district person). They should be able to supply you with some things. I am actually going to put some pictures of some things that my daughter in law uses in a post this week.

  19. thanks Kim for your response. Not just asking for center time, how about in general? What do you have them do at other times besides during stations/centers? When they might have finished their handwriting, journaling, or list making andy you might be working with a student or gathering materials for next activity.

  20. Lesley, I posted my schedule today so that might help, too. During readers and writers workshop I teach them that "good readers" and "good writers" work the whole time. I teach them what to do when they "think" they are finished. I do have anchor charts on my website with some of that info. Also, we build stamina. So at the beginning of the year they may only be "working" for 5-10 minutes. And ever so slowly we build to 45 minutes! The extra time at the beginning of the year is shifted to more free choice center time and we also rest for 30 minutes the first 6 weeks of school. When we are doing group work, my kids don't have a table or desk spot. We do all that kind of work on the carpet together. They have a lap board. This is the reason for the carpet bags. Whenever we are making lists or any of the other morning type work, we are doing those together. If they get behind while we are writing, I just tell them not to worry about that one. I would rather them be actively helping stretch out the words than just copying from the chart. My kids sit in rows on the carpet. And the front row is for those that might have a hard time keeping up or behaving! Hope this helps some.

  25. I have the same question Tracy has what happens as you take off the magnetic pieces? Is there a consequence or is it just a visual reminder?

  26. There is no consequence for taking off the pieces. It is more of a "let's try and keep them all up". If you have one child who is causing you to lose them all, maybe put that child on their own set of pieces on the floor in front of them. Megan did 5 monkeys for a child who continued to have problems. At the end of the day, she worked out a special plan depending on how many monkeys he had left.

  28. Denise, At the beginning you may need to give just a "look" as a reminder, but quickly move to just removing the magnet. If you find that one child is causing them to come off, we make them their own set of magnets to keep on the floor in front of them. They catch on rather quickly and we usually only have to remove one or two for them to get the idea. We also start over with all 5 magnets each time we come to the carpet.

  29. ...in desperation was looking for something to do about a student who tattles....came to this. Didn't have the materials on hand for Tattle Monster but brought in Mr. Potato Head today instead. Heh heh! IT WORKED. Mr. Potato Head did lose his ears today...but otherwise just great! Funniest thing...He is up on the shelf and watching the students (preK4) consult out loud with him as if he were real IS A HOOT. Benefit to me is that I could still overhear what the problem was in case it really did need to be dealt with....thanks so much :)

  30. Why is it kiddos want to interrupt and be silly in small group? They must feel more comfortable. I work with kinder strugglers, and they always feel the need to talk during my time with them. But in their class, they don't make a peep. I'm excited to try the magnet shapes. Thanks for the idea!
