Hi Kim and Megan! Thanks so much for the "freebies" for writing. The ideas are great. A couple of questions-do you do these "favorites" as a large group activity? and also, I had left some questions about "carpet bags" and the "word wall" with the word rings back on 9/15/2011 comment section. Would you have time to respond? Also, I am having trouble reading the text on these pictures (purple color)on writing-maybe it is my computer system at my school. Many thanks for the "extra" work you do and share with us! Have a good weekend! Maryann brennemm@carlisleschools.org
Maryann, I just answered your questions from yesterday. About the post, I will pass the info on to Megan about the color choice. I think it is hard to read, too.
The favorites are done as mini lessons with the whole class. First, I brainstorm on the favorite people paper to show them how to do it. Then, they talk to their partner about their favorite people. The students then go off to write independently in their writing folders.
The next day, I reread my list and give them a recording sheet and they write theirs. These are both mini lessons and should last only 10 minutes. So, each of the "favorites" list can be 1 or 2 mini lessons depending on the speed of writers you have.
Kim is a retired kindergarten teacher! She taught kindergarten for 30 years and now works as a national presenter. Now that she is retired, she spends her time volunteering in Meagn's room. When she isn't working at Megan's school, she loves to garden and spend time with her family. She and Andy, her husband, have two children, Megan, who is married to Nick, and Tyler, who is married to Ginny. That also have a beagle named Katie Ann. Megan followed in her mom's footsteps and is also a kindergarten teacher. She loves building relationsips with her kiddos and their families. When she isn't teaching, she enjoys spending time with her family. She is married to Nick. They enjoy all the GA sports teams! She and Nick have a miniature dachshund named Lily Grace.

I reposted the slides and changed the font to black. Hope that helps!
Thank you so much for sharing the printables for writing. I always struggle with how to start out writing in Kindergarten. These are great.
